Saints Injury Report Leaves Kamara as the Live Question

Cameron Jordan did not practice Wednesday and is already out for the New Orleans Saints’ opener at Detroit. Alvin Kamara returned limited on a knee, the only status on a four-name sheet that can still move Sunday.

Head coach Kellen Moore made the Jordan call at his media session before the club posted Wednesday’s official injury report. The count is small. The split is not.

Four Saints, and Only One Live Question

New Orleans practiced at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center on Sept. 9 and listed four players. Three sat out. Kamara was the lone limited player, which under league rules means less than 100 percent of normal reps.

Rookie tight end Delp and running back Estimé are still on a Friday clock. Jordan is not. Moore ruled him out for Sunday while the practice report still showed only a DNP, so the public sheet lagged the decision by a few hours.

Practice-squad receivers Cedric Tillman and Trey Palmer were also unseen during the open period. Clubs do not have to list practice-squad injuries on the regular report.

Jordan Will Miss His Third Game in 16 Seasons

Jordan, the longest-tenured Saint, will miss his third career game when New Orleans opens at Ford Field. He is the franchise’s all-time sack leader with 132 and is entering his 16th season, all in New Orleans. He needs one sack to pass Lawrence Taylor and Leslie O’Neal for 15th on the NFL list.

The hamstring dates to an Aug. 6 camp practice. He has not been available since, a 34-day gap through Wednesday. Moore still declined to put him on injured reserve, which leaves a path back before a four-week sit would require.

JORDAN’S THREE MISSES

1. Week 14, 2021: COVID protocol ends a 172-game streak.
2. Week 11, 2022: orbital fracture; he returned the next week.
3. Sept. 13, 2026: hamstring keeps him out of the Lions opener.

He has played 243 career games with 242 starts. The orbital fracture was his only prior injury miss. Moore said the 37-year-old has done everything he can to play, then closed the door for Sunday anyway.

He’s progressing well. He’s done a really good job through this recovery process, and we’ll just take it week by week.

Asked about injured reserve, Moore said, “We’ll just see how this thing responds.” That is the second-order piece of the listing. New Orleans is treating this as a week-to-week hamstring, not a season-opening IR stash, which means the edge room has to cover Sunday without a timeline past Week 2.

Who Rushes the Passer Without Jordan?

The same afternoon the club published a feature on Chase Young, the first-year captain who is healthy and in the starting lineup for the first time as a Saint. Young was voted a captain with Jordan, quarterback Tyler Shough, center Erik McCoy, safety Justin Reid, long snapper Zach Wood, guard David Edwards, linebacker Kaden Elliss, and linebacker Chris Rumph II.

Nine captains is a large group. Moore said about 18 to 20 players drew votes and that the line was drawn there. Young is the one on that list who now has to set the edge without the veteran who has started 242 games beside or in front of almost every pass rusher this franchise has employed since 2011.

Jordan’s sit was priced in after a month off the grass. What changes Sunday is the identity of the rush. Detroit gets a Saints front that is missing its all-time sack leader and leaning on a peer-voted captain who has been healthy through camp. That is a different problem for Penei Sewell’s side than a four-name report first suggests.

Kamara’s Knee Turns Etienne Into the Featured Back

Kamara had not practiced since he sprained his MCL in a joint session with the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 18 in Oxnard, Calif. The first public timeline was at least a month. Wednesday was day 22, and he was on the field in a limited role.

Moore sounded glad to have him back and refused to make a Sunday promise. “Good to get him back out there, thought there were some good things,” he said. “Any time you’re going through injury stuff, you’ve got to see how things respond, and then will see.”

Mike Garafolo, posting after Moore’s session, put the same idea in plainer terms: Kamara “has a shot to play,” and it “depends how the week goes.”

Shough, watching his backfield, treated the session as proof the 10-year veteran still looks like himself. “He shows up to practice today and I’m like, ‘Looks like nothing’s happened. He hasn’t missed a step,’” the quarterback said. “It’s going to be big for us, just because it brings so much variety to our offense. So, having him and Trav back there, it’s really dangerous.”

Trav is Travis Etienne, signed in March to a four-year contract and handed the starting job. Kamara took a pay cut to stay and accepted a rotation. The knee sprain made that rotation theoretical. After Sept. 1, Etienne was the only healthy running back on the active roster for a stretch.

• Travis Etienne: The starter, not on the injury report, and the volume back until Kamara proves the knee can take a full week.
• Alvin Kamara: Limited with the MCL sprain; still working toward Sunday, not cleared.
• Kendre Miller: Back on the field after leaving practice early on Sept. 1, with no injury tag Wednesday.
• Audric Estimé: DNP with a thigh; still a Friday question, not a Moore ruling.

Miller’s clean listing is the quiet note on the sheet. If Kamara is held out or held to a package, the second-down and passing-down snaps do not automatically revert to 2024 Kamara usage. They go to Etienne first, then to whoever among Miller and Estimé can practice the rest of the week.

That is why a four-name report with one limited running back is a game-script story. Detroit’s defense prepares for Etienne as the lead and Kamara as a maybe. Shough’s “dangerous” pairing exists only if the knee survives Thursday and Friday.

Detroit’s Eight Names Came From a Day Off

The Lions listed eight players and zero DNPs. They also did not practice Wednesday. The club’s own report says the estimated Wednesday participation is a paper exercise until Thursday’s real session.

Izien, Derrick Moore, and Wingo are the only estimated limits. The other five are listed as full. A longer list with no absences is not the same problem New Orleans has. Detroit’s Thursday practice is the first live check of those estimates. New Orleans already burned its only practice that counts as a true look at Jordan and Kamara.

For a road opener, that imbalance is the matchup. The Saints have a captain out and a veteran back on a snap-count watch. The Lions have three limited defenders on a day they were not in pads.

Ford Field Gets the Saints’ 60th Opener

Kickoff is Sunday, Sept. 13, at 12 p.m. CT (1 p.m. ET) at Ford Field. FOX has the call with Kenny Albert, former Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and Megan Olivi. WWL carries the Saints radio broadcast. It is New Orleans’ 60th season opener and the third Week 1 meeting in the series.

Detroit sat as a 6.5-point favorite in lines posted Sept. 9. A home favorite that size does not need Jordan’s absence explained twice. It does need a read on whether Kamara is a decoy, a package player, or inactive when inactives post 90 minutes before kickoff.

Friday’s report will add the game statuses the Wednesday sheet does not carry: out, doubtful, or questionable. Jordan’s box is already filled. Delp and Estimé still have to practice or be listed. Kamara has to show the knee can take another day’s work, then another, before Moore has to put a word next to his name.

Until that word lands, Etienne is the back Detroit has to stop, and Chase Young is the rusher it has to account for. The four-name report was the first public sheet of 2026. The game plan it creates is already down to those two men.
