A 26-year-old man died in hospital after his pickup truck collided with another vehicle while fleeing from police on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Burlington, Ontario. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the incident that occurred early Monday morning.
Police stop leads to pursuit
According to the SIU, Halton Regional Police officers stopped the driver of a pickup truck for speeding on the QEW near Guelph Line around 3:50 a.m. However, the driver did not comply and fled the scene, prompting the officers to pursue the truck.
The SIU said the officers lost sight of the truck shortly after and terminated the pursuit. They then found the truck involved in a collision with another vehicle at the off ramp to Brant Street.
Four occupants taken to hospital
The SIU said there were four occupants in the pickup truck, including the driver and three passengers. All of them were taken to hospital for treatment. One of the passengers, a 26-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries after arriving at the hospital.
The SIU did not provide any information about the condition of the other occupants of the truck or the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases where police officers are involved in incidents that result in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
Witnesses urged to contact SIU
The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. They are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information or video evidence to contact them at 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is also asking anyone who may have any information about the driver or the occupants of the pickup truck to get in touch with them.
The SIU said it will not provide any further information at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
