The God of Mischief returns for a second season of time-traveling adventures on Disney+. Here’s what happened in the first episode and what it means for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Loki Meets the New Boss
The season 2 premiere of Loki picks up right where season 1 left off, with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) confronting He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) at the Citadel at the End of Time. He Who Remains, also known as Kang the Conqueror, is the mastermind behind the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization that maintains the Sacred Timeline and prevents the emergence of alternate realities.
He Who Remains offers Loki and Sylvie a choice: either kill him and unleash a multiversal war, or take his place and rule the TVA. Loki urges Sylvie to trust him and accept the offer, but Sylvie is determined to kill He Who Remains for manipulating her life. She kisses Loki and then uses a TemPad to send him back to the TVA headquarters, where he is reunited with his friends Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku).
However, Loki soon realizes that something is wrong. The TVA agents do not recognize him, and the statues of the Time-Keepers have been replaced by a single statue of He Who Remains. Loki has been sent to a different timeline, where He Who Remains is openly ruling the TVA.
The Multiverse Is in Chaos
Meanwhile, Sylvie kills He Who Remains, fulfilling her revenge. However, she immediately regrets her decision, as she sees the Sacred Timeline branching into countless new realities. She collapses on the floor, sobbing.
The death of He Who Remains has unleashed a multiverse of madness, as different versions of Kang are now fighting for supremacy. This sets up the stage for upcoming Marvel projects, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Secret Invasion. It also opens up new possibilities for introducing characters from other franchises, such as the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
What’s Next for Loki?
Loki is now trapped in a timeline where he is a stranger to everyone he knows. He will have to find a way to escape and reunite with Sylvie, while also dealing with the consequences of her actions. He will also have to face new threats from various Kang variants, who may be more powerful and ruthless than He Who Remains.
The second season of Loki will explore more of Loki’s character development, as he continues to struggle with his identity and destiny. He will also encounter new allies and enemies along his journey, some of whom may be familiar faces from his past. The show will also delve deeper into the lore and history of the TVA and the multiverse, revealing more secrets and mysteries.
Loki season 2 is expected to have six episodes, like the first season. The show will premiere on October 5 in the US, and October 6 in the UK and Australia on Disney+.
