Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital to expand with new Crystal Spring Tower
The largest hospital in western Virginia is set to grow even bigger with a new expansion project that will add more than 500,000 square feet of space and enhance its services and facilities. The Crystal Spring Tower, as the project is called, will be the future home of the Cardiovascular Institute and an expanded Emergency Department at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A milestone for the region’s health care

The Crystal Spring Tower project is part of Carilion Clinic’s plan to invest more than $1 billion in the region over the next seven years, through expanding and modernizing its buildings. The project aims to improve access to care and meet the growing health care needs of the community and the region. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center and the hub of Carilion Clinic’s network of hospitals and clinics.

The new tower will add 18 operating rooms, 12 catheterization labs, 24 trauma bays, and 144 patient rooms to the hospital. It will also feature state-of-the-art technology and equipment, such as hybrid operating rooms, robotic surgery systems, and advanced imaging modalities. The tower will also have a helipad on the roof, allowing for faster and safer transport of patients.

The tower will house the Cardiovascular Institute, which will provide comprehensive and integrated care for patients with heart and vascular conditions. The institute will bring together cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, and other specialists to offer the best possible treatment options and outcomes for patients.

The tower will also expand the Emergency Department, which is one of the busiest in the state, serving more than 90,000 patients a year. The expansion will increase the capacity and efficiency of the department, as well as improve the comfort and privacy of patients and their families.

A communal effort and a vision for the future

The Crystal Spring Tower project is a collaborative effort between Carilion Clinic, the construction firms Robins & Morton and Branch Builds, and the architectural firm HKS. The project also involves input and feedback from the hospital staff, patients, and the community.

The project began in 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2025. The exterior of the tower is scheduled to be finished in early 2024, followed by the interior renovations. The project has reached several milestones along the way, such as the installation of a 240-foot tower crane in June 2023, and the raising of the final beam in December 2023.

The project is also designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, following the guidelines of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The tower will use energy-efficient systems, such as geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, and LED lighting. It will also incorporate natural elements, such as green roofs, rain gardens, and outdoor terraces.

The Crystal Spring Tower project is a testament to Carilion Clinic’s commitment to providing world-class care to the people of western Virginia and beyond. The project reflects Carilion Clinic’s vision of transforming health care and advancing medicine through innovation, education, and research.
