The militant group Al-Qaida’s Yemen branch recently announced the death of its leader, Khalid al-Batarfi, in circumstances that remain unclear. Al-Batarfi, who had a $5 million bounty on his head from the U.S. government, was a prominent figure in the extremist organization and was considered a significant threat due to his leadership role in Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the most dangerous branches of the terror network.
Al-Batarfi’s death was revealed through a video released by Al-Qaida, showing him wrapped in a funeral shroud bearing the group’s black-and-white flag. The video did not provide details regarding the cause of his death, and there were no visible signs of trauma on his body. His demise was announced on the eve of Ramadan, the Muslim holy fasting month, which adds a layer of symbolic significance to the timing of the announcement.
Khalid al-Batarfi, believed to be in his early 40s, was a Saudi national who traveled to Afghanistan in 1999 to fight alongside the Taliban during the U.S.-led invasion. He joined AQAP in 2010 and quickly rose through the ranks, eventually leading forces in taking over Yemen’s Abyan province. His release in 2015, following an AQAP raid that captured Mukalla, the capital of Yemen’s largest province, Hadramawt, marked a significant moment in the group’s expansion amid the chaos of the Yemeni civil war.
The U.S. government has long viewed AQAP as a persistent and evolving threat, especially after the group’s attempt to bomb a commercial airliner over the United States in 2009. AQAP also claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in 2015. Al-Batarfi took over the leadership of AQAP in February 2020, succeeding Qassim al-Rimi, who was killed by a U.S. drone strike.
The announcement of al-Batarfi’s death also included the naming of his successor, Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki, who now has a $6 million bounty on his head from the U.S. government. Al-Awlaki has publicly called for attacks against the United States and its allies, indicating a continuation of the group’s hostile stance towards Western nations.
